Mondays Mystical Creatures!

This is the first post in a weekly post about Mystical Creatures in books. Each Monday will be a new creature with info, pictures and of course books they feature in.

This week:
                               Unicorns
                               (Unus Comu)

The Unicorns of today usually are depicted as a horse with a singular horn. Tradionaly however they were also depicted as having a billy goat like beard, the tail of a lion and cloven hooves.

   Unicorns Throughout History:
  •  Found on some seals from the Indus Valley Civilization, thought to indicate high social rank
  •  In the Bible a creature called the Re'em is mentioned in various parts, often as a metaphor for strength.
  • In the 13th century Unicorns where symbolised with chaste, love and faithful marriage
  • It was believed only virgins could mount a Unicorn.
  • In the 17th century it was believed that Unicorn horn could neutralize poisions.
