King's Man and Thief
Author - Christie Golden
Genre - Fantasy
Pages - 336

Description from Goodreads

Lord Deveren Larath joined the thieves of Braedon thinking to expose a killer. Seven years later, he is now their leader, known among them as "Fox." No sooner have the elections been held than Deveren's brother, Damir, ambassador and master spy, comes to Braedon with dire news. The young king of the neighboring country has been imprisoned by his own counselor, and Damir fears war with Byrn is in the wind.

While Damir embarks on a desperate attempt to rescue the young king, "Fox" must deal with troubles closer to home--attempted murder, treachery, and most frightening of all, a dreadful curse that could claim Braedon and perhaps even all of Byrn.

Only the gods--and maybe the reluctant thief leader Fox --can stop it...

Murder, thieves, intrigue, twisty plots and magic oh my! King’s Man and Thief was just what I needed in my time of book slump sadness.

You may or may not know Christie Golden from her works on the World of Warcraft novels, but to say that she spins an interesting tale is an understatement, her use of emotions is spectacular and a few times I found myself misty eyed, especially towards the end of the novel.

Deveren (The Fox) is a fabulous main character. His heartbreaking entrance into the book has you hooked from the get go and you will love his trials and adventures throughout the book. He is kind, quick and has determination, a great man to root for. Our antagonist Marrika is also a terrific character, I really felt her jealousy, her anger and lust for revenge. The other characters, little Allika for example are well fleshed out and rounded, she is so cute but efficient and cunning. Needless to say I loved all the characters, even the evil ones because of the way they are portrayed and the expert use of prose you really come to feel them.

The magic and world building were a bit lacking but good overall, the intrigue and plot twists are what make the book un put-down able! Every time I set it down I found myself picking it back up five minutes later. “Just one more chapter” became my mantra. I would have finished this book in a day if that pesky little thing called sleep didn’t interfere. Oh! And that twist at the end! I did not see it coming and usually I am very good at figuring out the ending way before it happens.

Can you tell I love, love, LOVED this book? When I finished I swear little naked baby angels flew over my head playing harps. I think the one last thing I can possibly say is: Please Christie, can I have some more?

Question - What book do you think everyone should read? If you could gift the entire population with one book?

Wow! that is very hard, I think if I had to choose, Harry Potter! But, there are tons who have said that so I will go with something different and say the ENTIRE Forgotten Realms series by R. A. Salvatore. It was the first true series I read and really got me into reading. It starts off with the Dark Elf trilogy.

Spellbent
Aurhor - Lucy A. Snyder
Series - Jessie Shimmer #1
Genre - Urban Paranormal
Pages - 368

Description from Goodeads

In the heart of Ohio, Jessie Shimmer's roguish lover, Cooper, has been teaching her ubiquemancy, the art of finding the magic in everyday things. When they try to break a drought by calling down a rainstorm, a hellish portal opens and Cooper is ripped from this world, leaving Jessie fighting for her life against a vicious demon that's been unleashed.

In the aftermath, Jessie, who knows so little about her own true nature, is branded an outlaw. She must survive by her wits and with the help of her familiar, a ferret named Palimpsest. Stalked by malevolent enemies, Jessie is determined to find out what happened to Cooper. But when she moves heaven and earth to find her man, she'll be shocked by what she discovers—and by what she must ultimately do to save them all.

I started to read this then stopped after the first few chapters because a puppy got hurt, yes call me sentimental and girly but I hate puppies getting hurt! So fast forward to about 8 months later and I decided to give this another try, skipping those first few chapters.

 Glad I did!

While not overtly action, spellbent does employ some heart pounding moments, a kick-butt heroine and an awesomely cute ferret sidekick/familiar named Palimpsest (pal) whom we actually get to see a few chapters from his eyes, a nice touch if I do say so myself.

Jessie Shimmer is a witch, she can use magic and she uses it well enough with the help of Pal. She has it in her head to go after her lover Cooper, after the both of them messed up a storm spell and opened a portal to hell. Jessie is a no-nonsense kind of girl, even after loosing an eye and a hand to the Wutganger demon she called forth she still is determined to get Cooper back and she will not let those handicaps stop her!

I enjoyed the book, I liked the interactions of the characters, though we do not learn too much of some, Jessie, Pal, Warlock and Cooper are the main ones and Cooper is gone for 98% of the book, but we get to learn about his past eventually and it was very, very disturbing. There are some ick moments in this book and there are some sexy moments but they are far between and interlaced with nice humor that gave me chuckles.

Question - What have you learned about Book Blogging that you did not know before about the publishing industry?

I have learned that the publishers are very nice if you just ask them for ARCs and such. It seemed like such a foreign concept, and i was afraid to do it at first for fear of rejection and ridicule but now i know that even if it is a no, there is always someone who will say yes.

Grimspace
Author - Anne Aguirre
Series - Sirantha Jax #1
Genre - SciFi
Pages - 312

Description From Goodreads

By all accounts, Sirantha Jax should have burned out years ago…

As the carrier of a rare gene, Jax has the ability to jump ships through grimspace—a talent which cuts into her life expectancy, but makes her a highly prized navigator for the Corp. But then the ship she’s navigating crash-lands, and she’s accused of killing everyone on board. It’s hard for Jax to defend herself: she has no memory of the crash.

Now imprisoned and the subject of a ruthless interrogation, Jax is on the verge of madness. Then a mysterious man breaks into her cell, offering her freedom—for a price. March needs Jax to help his small band of rogue fighters break the Corp monopoly on interstellar travel—and establish a new breed of jumper.

Jax is only good at one thing—grimspace—and it will eventually kill her. So she may as well have some fun in the meantime…

I am not one for science fiction books, I find them to be too Star Wars-ish and boring. However, Grimspace was a wonderful change from that notion.

Sirantha Jax is a jumper, she has a special J-gene that allows her into Grimpsace and to jump ships from planet to planet in a matter of minutes. However, after 10 or so jumps most jumpers go insane or retire, Sirantha has done over 500 jumps and still has been able to keep her mind.. for the most part.

The book starts off kinda slow but picks up quickly, the middle is good as well, when they jumped to different planets I got excited to see what kind of planet it was, whats the weather like? Plants? Animals? It was wonderful. The middle also tapered off as well and got a little boring, and it got a bit confusing at times, the end though picked up again and really showed the authors creativity.

I enjoyed the characters, Sirantha is quite fun and she is always quippy. March is a good male lead, hes strong but also shows a bit of sensitivity. Dina and the crew are wonderful, I loved Dina and Siranthas interactions. Some characters we really do not get to spend much time with, truly I would have LOVED to spend more time with Mair (I forgot how to spell her name!) she was badass and I wish I could have learned more about her, same with Keri her apprentice, she does not stay long and it saddened me.

All in all Grimspace was a great book that surprised me immensely and I am happy to say I am looking forward to the next book.

"Brake!" she yelled. Hanna didn't hesitate, she hit them hard, sending the front end of  the car diving down and the heavily loaded back up, and the draug lost its balance. It rolled forward over the roof, over the front windshield, onto the hood, and suddenly turned liquid and re-formed facing back toward them, snarling.

Dragon Champion
Author - E. E. Knight
Series - Age of Fire #1
Genre - Anthropomorphic Fantasy
Pages - 384

Description from Goodreads

Knight's fantasy debut concerns a rare, scaleless gray dragon named Auron. Born high in a mountain cave, he witnesses the slaughter of his parents at the hands of a band of dwarves and eventually matures into the last hope for the survival of his kind. Once above ground, Auron learns quickly just how dangerous it is to be a dragon. With dwarves, elves, and humans relentlessly hunting him, Auron finds friendship in the most unlikely of places -- but the young dragon's quest to find others of his kind may not lead him to the answers he hopes to find.

Dragon champion follows the story of Auron, a young dragon who came into the world fighting. I loved that the book was told through the eyes of the dragon Auron, it was refreshing and dynamic. The world and dragon culture/traditions were fascinating and it made the book very special.

Auron has many heartbreaks and many triumphs in the book, he learns and adapts and grows throughout the story. His character was intense and likable. He was smart, resourceful and made quite a few friends, I loved his time with the wolves and with the dwarf Djar.

The beginning and the end of the book were really interesting, it tends to taper in the middle but it still is good even if a bit laggy. I think the biggest problem I had with this book was that there was hardly any action throughout it, there are spurts of fighting here and there but they are short and are not too descriptive.

If you are looking for a unique take on dragon books, or book in general and you are a fan of anthropomorphic literature then I think you will enjoy Dragon Champion if not the whole series which spans 6 books I believe.

Witchling
Author - Yasmine Galenorn
Series - Sisters of the Moon #1
Genre - Urban Paranormal
Pages - 304

Description from Goodreads

We’re the D’Artigo sisters: Half-human, half-Faerie, we’re savvy—and sexy—operatives for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency. But our mixed-blood heritage short-circuits our talents at all the wrong times. My sister Delilah shapeshifts into a tabby cat whenever she’s stressed. Menolly’s a vampire who’s still trying to get the hang of being undead. And me? I’m Camille—a wicked-good witch. Except my magic’s as unpredictable as the weather, as my enemies are about to find out the hard way...

At the Wayfarer Inn, a portal to Otherworld and the local hangout for humans and beasties alike, a fellow operative, Jocko, has been murdered. Every clue points to Shadow Wing, the soul-munching, badass leader of the Subterranean Realms. He’s made it clear that he aims to raze humankind to the ground, turning both Earth and Otherworld into his private playground. Our assignment: Keep Shadow Wing and his minions from creeping into Earth via the Wayfarer. The demons figure they’re in like Flynn. After all, with only my bumbling sisters and me standing in the way, how can they miss? But we’ve got a secret for them: Faulty wiring or not, nobody kicks ass like the D’Artigo girls...

It took me quite a few years of this sitting in my kindle before I actually gave this series a shot, I should not have waited so long! The story and world building where great and it had this magical, quest-like feeling to it even though its not an epic fantasy.

Camille is a witch, her sisters Menolly (vampire) and Delilah (werecat) are all operatives for an organization called the OIA (I forgot what it stands for) so they live Earthside with the humans. Though they are originaly from the Otherworld were elves, dwarfs, dragons and such live. They have been making it pretty good earthside too since humans know about them they have been living in relative harmony. That is, until some serious bad juju goes down.

So now the must find the 9 seals to stop Shadow Wing (a very bad demon) from destroying everthing. With the help of a FBH (full-blooded human) and Yokai Kitsune and a few other helpful helpers, they start on their ‘quest’ and hopefully do not get killed.

I liked the characters although most of them did not really get described personality wise, which I hope gets remedied in the next book, I would have liked to know background and emotions and feelings of more of the characters than just Camille and even then there’s not too much there, but I am not complaining too badly it is still a kick butt book.

Speaking of, there is action in this novel, of both kinds, there are fights and there are rather steamy situations so be warned if you are squeamish about such things, though few and far between they are there.

Meanwhile Magiere is struggling with her own dark nature, using Leesil’s love as an anchor to keep her grounded. For the personal price she paid to procure the orb of Fire up in the northern “Wastes” was more than she thought — and more than she wants to reveal to anyone else.

Viper Moon
Author - Lee Roland
Series - Earth Witches #1
Genre - Urban Paranormal
Pages - 332

Description From Goodreads

Cassandra Archer is the Huntress. She has faithfully served the Earth Mother for years, rescuing kidnapped children from monsters-both human and supernatural-dwelling in the ruins of the Barrows District. But when two children are kidnapped under similar circumstances, all clues point to a cataclysmic event on the next dark moon. Now Cass must race against the clock and prevent a sacrifice that could destroy the entire town.

For the first in a series this book is pretty good. Usually the first book sets up the world and the magic system (if there is one) and skips the characterization or skimps on it, same with story. Viper Moon however did not do that.

Cassandra is a Earth Witch (okay so it never really says that, she is called Huntress but the series name is Earth Witches so I assume that’s what she really is, I could be off base here) Anyways, she has been given powers by The Mother and tracks down children that go into the Barrows, a place that normal people can not see beyond a certain point. It is also a place children defiantly do not belong, there are gangs, monsters and all sorts of nasties just waiting to corrupt and/or kill them.

Cassie is given a certain child to find (two actuall) that leads her into the Barrows and into some sticky situations, explosions, crime lords, beautiful angelic-looking guys and a kick-butt cop are a few things she encounters. She also has a very cool little menagerie of pets, 2 snakes and a very disgruntled cat who all seem to be smarter than your average animals.

The characters were good, they all played their roles and fit their personas well. Cassie was strong, vulnerable, witty and proud, I liked her. The others were good as well, even the snakes and cat had personality. What I did not like? Insta-love.. yup, Viper Moon has it. I can’t stand it, although it was not a deal breaker, it was certainly not my favorite part, in fact it was my least. But oh well. Viper Moon is a great book non-the-less and I hope to read the second book soon. Watch the kiddies with this one though, there are moments of F-bombs, and some sex scenes.

QUESTION: Activity! Who do you want to be? If you could choose any character from a book. What do you think that character looks like and what do you have in common?

I will go with alot of others nd say Hermoine, also i will go with everyone else and say that being married to Ron..ehhhh.. but you win some you lose some. Hermoine is smart, brave, loyal and quick on her feet. She is everything I am not and i would love to be her.

Now I will pick  a second person to be different from everyone else, Shadari from A Whisper of Wings. She is kind, powerful and heartfelt. Yes, shes a furry but her character had me bawling at times and she really does do what is right for everyone even if it costs her dearly.

Review - Destined

Destined
Author  - P.C + Kristen Cast
Series - House of Night #9
Genre - YA paranormal
Pages - 325

Description from Goodreads

Zoey is finally home where she belongs, safe with her Guardian Warrior, Stark, by her side, and preparing to face off against Neferet – which would be a whole lot easier if the High Counsel saw the ex-High Priestess for what she really is. Kalona has released his hold on Rephaim, and, through Nyx's gift of a human form, Rephaim and Stevie Rae are finally able to be together – if he can truly walk the path of the Goddess and stay free of his father's shadow…

But there are new forces at work at the House of Night. An influx of humans, including Lenobia’s handsome horse whisperer, threatens their precarious stability. And then there’s the mysterious Aurox, a jaw-droppingly gorgeous teen boy who is actually more – or possibly less – than human. Only Neferet knows he was created to be her greatest weapon. But Zoey can sense the part of his soul that remains human, the compassion that wars with his Dark calling. And there’s something strangely familiar about him…

Will Neferet’s true nature be revealed before she succeeds in silencing them all? And will Zoey be able to touch Aurox’s humanity in time to protect him – and everyone – from his own fate? Find out what’s destined in the next thrilling chapter of the House of Night series.

In this installment Neferet is up to her usual tricks and the gang has to stop her, the usual, minus Jack (cry!). There is a new face at school though, Aurox. Aurox is not entirely human and definatly not vampire. He is an enigma and as Neferets minion Zoey and the others do not trust him, good plan.

The entirety of the book is centered around Zoey’s mothers’ death. Who did it? How? That is what Zoey wants to find out, and she will. Thanatos returns from the previous book to help. All in all the story and stuff is generic House of Night but there are a few trick and twists (that ending!) that will make you gasp.

The characters themselves are the same, except for Shaunee. Shaunee is growing up, she is questioning her twin-ness and is becoming her own person. Rephaim is struggling with his dad issues and Kalona is not so evil this time around, I liked that. The rest though.. same. Aprhodite is still a bitch, Zoey is still way goody-goody, Damien is still a smart adorable guy, etc, etc.

If you love House of Night, I think you will enjoy Destined, there is enough action, drama and change to keep you reading and onto the next book Hidden.

Dragonspell
Author - Donita K. Paul
Series - Dragon Keeper Chronicles #1
Genre - YA Fantasy
Pages - 339

Description from Goodreads

One Dragon Egg Holds the Key to the Future.

Once a slave, Kale is given the unexpected opportunity to become a servant to Paladin. Yet this young girl has much to learn about the difference between slavery and service.

 A Desperate Search Begins…

A small band of Paladin’s servants rescue Kale from danger but turn her from her destination: The Hall, where she was to be trained. Feeling afraid and unprepared, Kale embarks on a perilous quest to find the meech dragon egg stolen by the foul Wizard Risto. First, she and her comrades must find Wizard Fenworth. But their journey is threatened when a key member of the party is captured, leaving the remaining companions to find Fenworth, attempt an impossible rescue, and recover the egg whose true value they have not begun to suspect…

Dragonspell is about a girl named Kale, who after a harrowing start learns she can find dragon eggs and is tasked to go on a quest to find the rare meech egg and stop and evil wizard from devastating everything and everyone around her.

The book was good, the characters were a very eclectic group and I liked the different races and characteristics of them all. Kale is sweet and vulnerable and tough, Dar is a joy and is like a big brother type. The others are their own person and I very much liked them all.

The world the author built is beautiful and wonderous without being cumbersome in descriptions, the writing style is fluid ad easy. I also liked the mindspeak aspect, Kale can read others’ mind and some of them can speak back to her like Leetu, one of her companions and of course Paladin, the almost lordlike hero (but not the hero of the story). The dragons can also mindspeak and I enjoyed their presence, they were very adorable and childlike in their wonder and amusement but also mature as well.

I recommend this book to fantasy and YA readers since it really is a mix of both elements. It is enjoyable and a good start to what I hope is a good and thrilling series.
