"You're a strange one, aren't yer?' said Nolan as they filed into the slave-house. But it was said warmly, and Arren finally realized that since he had first come into the slave-house and take his place among the slaves, no-one - no-one - had drawn attention to the fact that he was a Northerner. There were no stares, no comments, no condescension or jokes, light-hearted or otherwise.

The Eyes of Kid Midas
Author - Neal Shusterman
Genre - Young Adult
Pages - 176

Description From Goodreads

The story of one boy's struggle to control his thirst for revenge as well as his desire for everything else. Atop the Divine Watch lies the key to the most awesome power imaginable--a pair of sunglasses that grant their wearer access to their every dream. But before Kevin Midas realizes it, his wishes are tearing his world apart.

For 13 year old Kevin Midas life sucks. Bullied and a social loser only his friend Josh could make things better, until Kevin finds a pair of sunglasses on top of a mountain. Then everything c hanges as Kevin wears the glasses, things he thinks and things he wants start appearing but not everything comes out for the better. It’s a classic case of ‘Be careful what you wish for’ and shows how someone can be so corrupted by Greed that a simple answer is often the farthest from your mind.

The eyes of kid midas was.. just okay. Really, it could not compare to Shustermans other books like Dread locks and The Shadow Club. It has its moments, Kevin is convincing and his friend Josh is as well, The bully is predictably mean and nasty and his older sister is in his eyes predictably annoying. The real meat of the story is the though process behind the story, what if everything were a dream? What if you could create your own dreamworld? What would happen and would you like it? Could you change it if you could, or would you want to?.

These are the question I was asking myself when I was done reading this book and I think that is what the author wanted to happen. While it may not be as good as some of the authors other stuff, this was a fun, easy and short read and im never entirely disappointed with Shustermans work.

Question: Have you ever bought a book because of a bad review?

Wow, no I do not think I have! I certainly don't take reviews to heart though. What some people may view as bad I may love and what some love I may not, so while I may read reviews I do not let them be my basis for buying a book.

Hounded
Author - Kevin Hearne
Series - The Iron Druid #1
Genre - Urban Paranormal
Pages - 289

Description From Goodreads

Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, lives peacefully in Arizona, running an occult bookshop and shape-shifting in his spare time to hunt with his Irish wolfhound. His neighbors and customers think that this handsome, tattooed Irish dude is about twenty-one years old—when in actuality, he’s twenty-one centuries old. Not to mention: He draws his power from the earth, possesses a sharp wit, and wields an even sharper magical sword known as Fragarach, the Answerer.

Unfortunately, a very angry Celtic god wants that sword, and he’s hounded Atticus for centuries. Now the determined deity has tracked him down, and Atticus will need all his power—plus the help of a seductive goddess of death, his vampire and werewolf team of attorneys, a sexy bartender possessed by a Hindu witch, and some good old-fashioned luck of the Irish—to kick some Celtic arse and deliver himself from evil.

Atticus O’Sullivan is a very old Druid. As a very old Druid he is expected to have and enemy o r right? Well, he does, in the form of a very not so loving love god who wants nothing more than to rip the sword from Atticus that he claims is his, then destroy him. Of course Atticus can not allow this and with a bevy of Goddesses at his side, a vampire and the Tempe pack werewolves (even a witch or two) he begins his stand against the love god and fights for his life.

I will start off by saying that I had the hardest time pronouncing the names of the characters in this book (even with the handy guide in the beginning) so I will not go into great detail about this book. I will however say that I thoroughly enjoyed it! Atticus is witty, badass and not afraid to stand up to the bad guy. I liked his character, it is hard to find books with male protagonists that are not all about themselves or ‘chasseing tail’

My favorite character? Oberon, his irish wolfhound with whom he shares a telekinetic bond  with. Oberon is loyal and brave but still very much a dog (with a love for French poodles) and the author keeps this in mind when they are communicating, I loved their talks the most, and the end is precious and had me laughing out loud.

The action, the wit and best of all, the lack of smut (only hinted at) makes this book one that I wont mind reading again sometime, right after I finish the rest of the series!

I thought about that for a moment, remembering the cold power, then guessed, "Shaman? Where you an African Shaman?"

"Yes. You know of my world?"

She seemed almost pleased with the thought, and though that wasn't what i had meant, i agreed. "um. Some. A Little." I mean, I could pick it out on a map.
