Fury of the Phoenix
Author - Cindy Pon
Genre - YA Fantasy
Pages - 362

Description from Amazon The Gods have abandoned Ai Ling. Her mysterious power haunts her day and night, and she leaves home—with just the moon as her guide—overwhelmed by her memories and visions and an unbearable sense of dread. For Ai Ling knows that Chen Yong is vulnerable to corrupt enchantments from the under-world. How can she do nothing when she has the skill and power to fight at his side?

A dream has told her where he is, the name of the ship he is traveling on, his destination. So she steals off and stows away on board. The ocean voyage brings with it brutal danger, haunting revelations, and new friendships, but also the premonition of a very real and terrifying threat.

Zhong Ye—the powerful sorcerer whom Ai Ling believed she had vanquished in the Palace of Fragrant Dreams—is trapped in Hell, neither alive nor dead. Can he reach from beyond the grave to reunite with Silver Phoenix and destroy Chen Yong? And destroy whatever chance Ai Ling has at happiness, at love?

Fury of the phoenix continues with Ai Ling desperately trying to sneak aboard a ship that Chen Yong is on, Ai Ling has seen danger in his future and wants to save him from it. Who better to do so? For Ai Ling has slain demons and even killed Zhong Ye, an almost immortal.

However, everything does not go swimmingly for Ai Ling, Chen Yong is furious and for the better part of the book, he ignores her or is rude, sure there are very sweet moments but they are fleeting. I found myself more drawn to Zhong Ye’s story with Silver Phoenix and his adventures and quest for immortality were far more interesting.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed watching Ai Ling grow and do things that would be considered irreprehensible in her culture, it just was not enough o really get me hooked onto her character this time around. There were far less stories and lore in this book, only one demon/creature and less action. I could not connect with anyone really, even the trajic Silver Phoenix was bland to me and I got tired of hearing how beautiful she was. We also lose sight of what happens to Mei Gui and her son after a while and I kind of wish I knew. It is by no means a bad sequel but it is by no means the best, some questions are answerd, some loose ends tied up but I just struggled through it.

If you read Silver Phoenix though, you will enjoy this one if for nothing but learning what happens after Zhong Ye is killed and seeing if Ai Ling and Chen Yongs relationship further.

Three black-robed figures in golden masks stared down at Hazel.

Review

The evelyn project was a compelling ride of a novel. Occult, mystery, magic, and romance all in one.

The dialogue may be offputting to some, it is not traditional in the sense of what we are used to (Modern) however, if you take the time to get used to it then you will find its quite lovely and has its own character. Speaking of characters, The evelyn project has a bevvy of them! There are so many characters that it does seems overwhelming at some points but each one has their own distinct personalities, up and downs.  The other thing is the chapters tend to be small, there are TONS of them, reminiscent of Game of Thrones, I like that actually.

The action is adequate and at times heart-pounding. The romance is sweet and often times makes you wonder. If you are looking for a book full of conspiracy and mystery then you may want to check out The Evelyn Project, you will not be disappointed.

Fair Coin
Author - E. C. Meyers
Genre - Paranormal YA
Pages - 250

Description From Goodreads

Sixteen-year-old Ephraim Scott is horrified when he comes home from school and finds his mother unconscious at the kitchen table, clutching a bottle of pills. The reason for her suicide attempt is even more disturbing: she thought she’d identified Ephraim’s body at the hospital that day.
Among his dead double’s belongings, Ephraim finds a strange coin—a coin that grants wishes when he flips it. With a flick of his thumb, he can turn his alcoholic mother into a model parent and catch the eye of the girl he’s liked since second grade. But the coin doesn’t always change things for the better. And a bad flip can destroy other people’s lives as easily as it rebuilds his own.
The coin could give Ephraim everything he’s ever wanted—if he learns to control its power before his luck runs out.

Ephraim is your normal everyday kid, he has a best friend, a crush and a magical coin… okay so hes not that ordinary. Ephraim comes upon a magical coin  and after a mysterious note shows up in his locker telling him to make a wish and flip it, his whole world turns upside down as everything and everyone he knows and loves changes right before his eyes.

Another one of those ‘be careful what you wish for’ books, Fair coin actually brings something knew to the table (you find out about halfway through the book) and changes tactics, an interesting plot twist to be sure but at times I was very bored and had to drudge through a few chapters while telling myself it will get better. It did.

Ephraim is a good character, a typical goody-goody who has to do the right thing but sometimes the right think can really mess everything up!  I liked the character of Nathan, he was a bit pervy and a bit of a dork but he actually had a really good personality, although he becomes a tad… unstable later on.  Jena is also a good character and the twins, Mary and Shelley ( a nice and creative twist on names).

All in all Fair Coin is an interesting and new take on a genre that is getting a bit repetitive and I look forward to more books from Myers.

There was no way she could keep him from coming with her. "Suit yourself."
