In My Mailbox

Friday, September 13, 2013

I have about a zillion things to do today (I don't wanna go outside!!!) So I can't post a Follow Friday. So instead enjoy a picture of my best buddy. She is a Maltese/Poodle mix and I do not know what I would do without her. She is always by my side when I read, making me laugh, cuddling and just making me have the biggest smiles ever.

The Raft
Author - S. A. Bodeen
Series - Stand alone
Genre - Contemporary YA
Pages - 231

Description from Goodreads

Robie is an experienced traveler. She’s taken the flight from Honolulu to the Midway Atoll, a group of Pacific islands where her parents live, many times. When she has to get to Midway in a hurry after a visit with her aunt in Hawaii, she gets on the next cargo flight at the last minute. She knows the pilot, but on this flight, there’s a new co-pilot named Max. All systems are go until a storm hits during the flight. The only passenger, Robie doesn’t panic until the engine suddenly cuts out and Max shouts at her to put on a life jacket. They are over miles of Pacific Ocean. She sees Max struggle with a raft.

And then . . . she’s in the water. Fighting for her life. Max pulls her onto the raft, and that’s when the real terror begins. They have no water. Their only food is a bag of Skittles. There are sharks. There is an island. But there’s no sign of help on the way

Robie is a 15 year old girl who just wants to have a little fun alone. No parents, no AJ and no one to check on her, but after her first day alone all she wants to do is go home and leave Honolulu. However, one she steps foot on the plane that will take her back to Midway and home, her life Is changed forever and she will find herself struggling to survive in the middle of the ocean with only a raft and Max the copilot to help her.

I read this book in one day, it is short but there is much packed within it. Robie is a believable character. A spoiled and somewhat selfish girl she has to learn to grow up and adapt quickly…or die. I found her vulnerability and thought process to be what a normal person who actually knows less to be like when faced with the same situation. It is terrifying and she did make mistakes and she did some things right, she gave up and she went on… she was not one dimensional.

The twist about 70% in was a good one and I really did not expect it, I was pleasantly surprised the author pulled that on me. The author also does not skimp on the teaching of Mother Nature and the circle of life, things die and things survive and we should not turn from one trying to only see what we want to see. The end was good and I was glad I gave this book a shot, if you read it I am sure you will not be disappointed.

Top Ten Tuesday

10 books you would love to see as movies/shows

Who wouldn't want a movie or show with dark elves, orcs, dwarves, and other such fantastical creatures? Salvatore creates a majestic and wonderful world and it has long been my favorite series ever, even more than 16 books in!

I could not put this book down and I think that is my deciding factor to why this would make a kick ass movie.

It is just a beautiful romance/action novel set in the Tang Dynasty and I loved every minute of reading it. I enjoy Chinese fiction very much and Jeannie Lin is one of my favorite authors of that genre.

The concept of the book that the world is always changing, shifting and moving is so great and the characters you really fall in love with. It has action, a touch of romance and lots of magic and suspense.

Ok, sure, there are TONS of vampire novels in the world. However, this one add another element.. another monster to the tale. It is also very well written and I loved the action/romance.

I would like to see this movie REMADE. The had made this into a movie a few years ago but it was not what it should have been. I want a movie of this to be the masterpiece that the book was, I want to cry and swoon with emotion like I did when reading it.

Wicked tiny, bitey poisonous fae? YES!!

These books are quite funny and have a slew of different gods and goddesses as well as monsters in them. A talking dog, a sword wielding druid and more!

Dystopian! I do enjoy these types of books and this one was very well done.

Again vampires but there is also an elf, a dhampir, and a really, really smart pooch! There is action, intrigue and it is overall a really good book.

Changeling
Author - Yasmine Galenorn
Series - Otherworld/Sisters of the Moon #2
Genre - Urban Paranormal
Pages - 278

Description From Goodreads.

Someone's been slaughtering the Weres of the Rainier Puma Pride, and my sisters and I have been enlisted to investigate by Zachary Lyonnesse, golden boy of the werepumas. Right away we smelled demon trouble, and we tracked it directly into the snare of the Hunters Moon Clan, sworn enemies of Puma Pride. But there's more than Were rivalry at work. It's that old demon Shadow Wing who is setting a deadly snare for the pumas. We have to find out why, which means a visit one to of the Immortals.

Unfortunately, for my sisters and me, our half-human blood is just enough to put us in mortal danger." "At the Wayfarer Inn, a portal to Otherworld and the local hangout for humans and beasties alike, our fellow operative Jocko's been murdered. Every clue points to Shadow Wing, the soul-munching, bad-ass leader of the Subterranean Realms. He's made it clear that he aims to raze humankind to the ground, turning both Earth and Otherworld into his private playground. Our assignment: keep Shadow Wing and his minions from creeping into Earth via the Wayfarer. The demons figure they're in like Flynn. After all, with only my 'bumbling' sisters and me standing in the way, how can they miss? But we've got a secret for them: faulty wiring or not, nobody kicks ass like the D'Artigo girls.

The gang is back and this time a new enemy has surfaced. Imagine a world full of weres werepumas, werebears, werecats etc and now imagine your enemy is a troupe of were SPIDERS! Creepy right? They are just not any spiders though, they are hobo spiders; very, very venomous.

Run Away!!!!

The group is still searching for the seals and this time its Delilahs turn to tell the tale. I liked her voice mostly because when she transformed into her tabby cat form the perspective changes and it is more cat-like and sporatic. She also is going through some more changes, and its pretty cool.

We are introduced to new characters that are pretty well rounded, Delilah is still with Chase which is nice and she seems very loyal to him albeit her half fae heritage. This book is a nice second installment to the first Witchling and if I am correct the next book Darkling is about the vampire Menolly and that should be quite interesting!

The Story of the Stone
Author - Barry Hughart
Series - The Chronicles of Master Li and Number Ten Ox #2
Genre - Fantasy
Pages - 289

Description From Goodreads.

In the valley of Sorrows, a monk is brutally murdered for a worthless manuscript, and the abbot of the humble monastery calls upon Master Li and Number Ten Ox to investigate the seemingly senseless killing. The most likely suspect is the infamous Laughing Prince, founder of the valley, whose murderous frenzies have made him a legend. But even Master Li must concede that the prince has a pretty good alibi: he's been dead for more than seven hundred years.

Undaunted, Master Li and Number Ten Ox begin their search for the Laughing Prince. Together they roam a mystical countryside populated by demons, ghosts, murderers, and mad kings to the very gates of heaven itself -- and what they find there is even stranger still.

I do not know what went wrong here. The first book in the trilogy Bridge of Birds was a masterpiece, The Story of the Stone just fell short. The adventures they have in this book just can not compare and the storyline is overly complicated, at least to me.

There are some new characters, Grief of Dawn and Moon Boy for example and they added a nice touch. I liked Moon Boy far better than Grief of Dawn but still she was good and the ending was sad and beautiful at the same time.

Master Li is still smart and witty, Tex Ox is still the same big ox-like man and the strength of the team. Nothing has really changed in this installment and I was left disappointed for the most part.

QUESTION - Bookshelf Tour: Give us a tour of your bookshelf

Actually this is a co-existence between my guy friend and I. I usually get new books from authors in paperbacks and ARCs, I usually always get books on my  kindle. These are my not read books, i donate my read ones to a used bookstore. My friend has the whole Harry Dresden series on top and mine are on the third and second shelves as well as the fourth shelf. As you can see we are highly disorganized. The coolest thing about the room though is its got a black light so all my books glow when its on.
